The Ultimate Guide to 30 Best Men’s Shaving Kits in 2020
1. Top 3 Shaving kits (Overall Best Performers)
These shaving kits are at the top of their respective categories. They’re fantastically well reviewed, with carefully chosen, top-of-the-line components.
Despite this, all three of our picks are very affordable, especially given the quality of the products involved.
If you’re not too picky about which type of shaving kit you get, choose one of these.
Best overall high-quality handmade and the most complete shaving kit.
Luxurious safety razor kit made of only premium materials (Chrome, Ivory ...)
Best straight razor kit with the Top quality Japanese steel blade.
1.1 Ultimate Shaving Kit by Maison Lambert
Starting with the most expensive item in this kit – A Maison Lambert Faux Horn handle shaving brush.
It’s made of high quality 100% pure black badger hair, it’s soft and durable.
This luxury shaving kit also comes with a butterfly open double edge safety razor and plenty of blades to get you going.
Organic high-fat soap and aftershave balm, a brush stand, shaving bowl, and an extra bar of body soap help round things out.
Both soaps and the aftershave have a particularly desirable set of organic ingredients and essential oils, moreover they’re both hypoallergenic.
They’ll moisturize and help you avoid razor burn without irritating your skin, all while smelling great.
Lastly, it’s packaged in an amazing wood cigar box, making it one of the best shaving kits on the market in 2020, for a reasonable price.
What we think about Ultimate Shaving Kit by Maison Lambert:
If you want a set of high-quality handmade shaving products, this Maison Lambert set is a great choice. The combination of natural ingredients and essential oils make the soap in this set especially pleasant to shave with.
Even if you’ve already got everything you need to shave, the high-quality soap, badger brush, and aftershave make this a great purchase or gift.
1.2 Parker 29L Safety Razor Shave Set
While it doesn’t come with any soaps, balms, or aftershaves, this kit is still a great way to start your shaving journey or simply pick up a great brush and a spare razor.
You’ll have to pick up your own shaving soap, of course, but that gives you an opportunity to choose a product you want rather than getting locked in with what the kit comes with.
It’s worth noting that this brush is on the stiffer end of badger brushes. It’s pretty soft compared to a boar or horsehair brush, but it’s not going to compete with an extra soft silvertip brush.
Stiffer brushes are generally a bit better at working up lather and have a slightly different feel on your face.
What we think about Parker 29L Safety Razor Shave Set:
The fact that this kit doesn’t come with any soap or aftershave is both a plus and a minus. It’s a great way to start off safety razor shaving while letting you pick your own soap, but you’ll have to do some research and actually buy that soap on your own. The way the brush and razor sit in the stand looks very nice, making this one of the most aesthetic sets on the market. This set is a great choice – but if you’re getting it as a gift for someone else, consider giving the recipient an organic shaving soap and some razor blades as well!
1.3 A.P. Donovan – Excellent 7⁄8” Straight Razor Set With Gold Etching
Instead, it’s made of high-quality Japanese steel and comes razor sharp right out of the box.
In order to help you care for your blade, this shaving kit comes with a two-sided leather strop and abrasive paste. This combination is everything you need to hone and polish your razor in between shaves.
This kit comes with a genuine badger brush and a tasteful display box. Like the Parker set above you’ll need some shaving soap to get started.
What we think about A.P. Donovan – Excellent 7⁄8″ Straight Razor Set With Gold Etching:
Straight razors with a honed blade (like the one in this kit) are much easier to use than shavettes (similar style razors that take disposable blades). If you (or someone you know) wants to get started using this traditional shaving tool, this kit is a great way to begin that journey. The included strop, high-quality razor, and luxurious badger brush give you the most important tools you need to shave. All you need to provide is some shaving soap or cream.
2. Top 3 Double Edge Safety Kits
Safety razors come in two primary styles: butterfly (or twist to open) and three-piece.
As far as shaving is concerned, both styles handle identically. The differences pop up when it’s time to change the blades in your razor.
To change the blade in a butterfly-style safety razor, you simply twist the bottom of the handle and the head opens up.
To change the blade in a 3-piece razor, you have to disassemble the handle completely.
Most people don’t have a strong preference either way (since changing a blade takes only a few seconds at most), but it’s a bit easier to change the blade in a butterfly style razor with wet hands.
Luxury safety razor kit with an elegant sandalwood handle and stainless steel head.
Great gift, even greater complete shaving kit package of high quality for a low price.
Butterfly opening on this deluxe safety razor works like a charm and is packed together with the most popular chrome stand and pure badger brush.
2.1 Luxury Brazilian Sandalwood Safety Razor Wet Shaving Kit by Naked Armor
It’s got a safety razor, shaving soap, and a genuine badger brush to complete your shaving experience.
In other words, all you need to do is pick up some disposable blades and supply your own bowl to make lather in.
The wonderful brush and well-made razor mean that this kit is still a great way to top off your collection of shaving tools.
Unless you have a really nice brush already, you’ll get plenty of use out of both!
The only real downside to this kit is the lack of a shaving stand.
Stands make it much easier to care for your brush and have it last for years – and you’ll want the genuine badger brush included in this kit to last for a long time.
What we think about Luxury Brazilian Sandalwood Safety Razor Wet Shaving Kit by Naked Armor:
This Naked Armor shaving kit comes with the essentials you need to start shaving with a safety razor, making it a great gift or starting point. Like other high-end shaving kits, however, it’s still a decent purchase due to the badger brush. The elegant wooden handles help to set this kit apart from other options on the market.
2.2 Gentleman Jon Complete Wet Shave Kit
It’s got a badger brush, safety razor, a small pack of disposable blades, shaving soap, bowl, and even an alum block. This means you can start practicing traditional shaving techniques the moment you open the box.
While this mens shaving kit is pretty inexpensive, it doesn’t skimp out on quality.
The genuine badger brush still feels wonderfully soft and will last for quite a long time, while the shaving soap makes excellent lather in the provided bowl.
The gunmetal finish on the razor might not be quite as pretty as the polished wooden handles you can find elsewhere, but it doesn’t impede the function of the tool at all (and it might even be more durable)
What we think about Gentleman Jon Complete Wet Shave Kit:
Most of these kits serve as both gateways to traditional shaving and great gifts. This one may very well be the best choice. It offers excellent value for an exceptionally low price, meaning that you’ll get (or provide) an excellent shave without breaking the bank.
2.3 Parker 96R Safety Razor Shave Set
The stand included in this Parker kit helps keep the high-quality badger brush in pristine condition in between uses. It also makes an elegant addition to your bathroom counter, with a timeless chrome finish and simple lines.
Like the similar Parker set above, this kit comes with a soft badger brush, a safety razor, and a chrome stand.
All three items are very well made, durable, and will help you (or a friend) get a perfect shave every time. Unfortunately, you’ll need to buy soap and disposable blades yourself.
What we think about Parker 96R Safety Razor Shave Set:
This kit is one of the nicest looking safety razor sets available. If aesthetics are important to you but you still want a quality brush and safety razor, this kit is a top choice. The included stand adds to the look while keeping the brush soft for as long as possible.
3. Top 3 Vintage Shaving Kits for Men
Vintage shaving involves the use of a shaving brush to make a lather and push it into your skin.
So what kind of brush is best? There are three kinds of brushes that you’ll commonly find these days:
Badger brushes are the most expensive shaving brushes. They’re very soft and easy to care for since they don’t require soaking. On the other hand, they’re not particularly stiff, so it sometimes takes longer to make a lather with a badger brush.
Boar brushes are much stiffer and less expensive than badger brushes. In order to get the most out of a boar brush, you have to soak it in warm water for a couple minutes before you use it.
Synthetic brushes aren’t made with animal hair at all. There’s a huge amount of variance in synthetic brush quality. The best ones are softer than badger brushes, last longer, and make better lather. They’re also very expensive. The worst ones are very cheap, but fall apart easily and don’t feel very good on your face.
Classy and durable old-fashioned double-edged safety razor kit with a premium shaving bowl.
Stylish Old Fashioned Shaving Set with Premium Stainless Steel Safety Razor and Silvertip Badger Brush
Wonderful kit for the price and highly recommended for starters in shaving the old fashioned way. Great gift for your dad or grandfather.
3.1 The Clean Shave Finest Wet Shaving Set
It’s got a badger brush, a double-edged safety razor, and a bowl to mix your lather in.
Enjoy shaving with an old-fashioned style, or gift it to someone who’d prefer a more traditional approach to their morning shave.
This set does NOT come with soap or a stand. Shaving stands do an excellent job of keeping a genuine badger brush (like this one) in tip-top condition for a long time.
Since the primary sell of an expensive shaving kit like this one is the genuine badger brush, it’s very important to be able to properly protect your investment.
What we think about The Clean Shave Finest Wet Shaving Set:
Like other high-end shaving kits, the genuine badger brush in this kit makes it well worth the purchase price. It only comes with blades, the brush, a razor, and a bowl, however, so if you’re after a more complete experience you’ll need to pick up soap and a stand (or choose a more complete kit).
3.2 Deluxe Old Fashioned Men’s Shaving kit by Vintage Shaving
Instead of including a real badger brush, Vintage Shaving has elected to use a high-quality synthetic one instead.
While cheap synthetic shaving brushes are terrible, the one included in this kit mimics a very high-grade badger brush quite well.
It’s easier to care for, incredibly soft, and will help to deliver an excellent shave. In fact, the brush is quite comparable to $150+ silvertip badger brushes.
This kit comes with a stand, a razor, a starter blade, the shaving brush, and an additional brush to help clean out the razor. You’ll have to buy your own soap.
What we think about Deluxe Old Fashioned Men’s Shaving kit by Vintage Shaving:
Despite the modern brush, this is one of the better old-fashioned shaving kits you can find. The low price, incredible softness, and simple safety razor make this a great choice. Whether it’s for you or a gift for someone else, you won’t go wrong with this kit.
3.3 Rustic Shave and Grooming Kit – (Tartan, Lavender & Cedar) by Cardinham | Killigrew
It eschews the highly popular badger hair brush for one made with natural boar hair.
Not only does this cut the cost down tremendously, it’s also an improvement for some people.
Badger brushes are incredibly soft, but they’re not as good at working up a lather as a stiffer boar brush.
The kit comes with the boar brush, a razor, shaving soap, aftershave balm, blades for your razor, and a bowl to make your lather in.
All of this comes in a hand-stained wooden box that can double as a brush stand in a pinch. In other words, it’s an absolutely perfect gift.
What we think about Rustic Shave and Grooming Kit:
If you don’t mind a stiffer brush and you want a compact package with everything you need to shave, this kit is a top choice. It’s an excellent gift as well, although you should also check out the section below if you’re looking for a kit to give to someone else.
4. Top 3 Shaving Kits for Gifts
If you’re picking out a shaving kit as a gift, consider the recipient.
Does the person you’re buying the gift for wet shave already? If so, you’ll want a kit with lots of new products for them to try. You’re less worried about the inclusion of a razor.
If they don’t shave already, make sure that the shaving kit you choose has everything you need to shave right out of the box.
If you’re not sure, try to find something in between. Look for a set with either a very nice or a very cheap brush (so they’ll either use it or feel fine about letting it sit unused) and plenty of quality soap, oils, and balms.
Complete and affordable shaving set that can also be a great gift for any man.
Premium wooden straight razor shaving kit that comes already wraped makes it a fantastic gift idea.
4.1 Premium Luxury Shaving Gift Set by Shave Maxx
It’s an ideal gift set since the recipient doesn’t have to get anything on their own in order to begin shaving.
The contents are great for a safety razor newbie, too.
The razor itself is solid, although changing blades may take some getting used to (you have to remove the whole head).
The included Colonel Conk soap is highly sought after by shaving enthusiasts due to its high glycerin content.
Finally, the badger brush is quite serviceable. It’s very good for the cost, with soft bristles and just enough backbone to work up a lather easily.
If the gift is going to someone who’s already a big shaving enthusiast, however, there’s a chance they might already own a nicer brush.
What we think about Premium Luxury Shaving Gift Set by Shave Maxx:
The complete nature of this kit makes it an excellent gift, while the low cost and desirable contents (great soap and very nice brush for the price) mean it’s great to buy for yourself, too. This is one of the best shaving kits around.
4.2 Zeva Wooden Straight Razor Shave Ready Handcrafted Shaving Set
It’s got a high-carbon steel cut-throat razor, a badger brush and stand, a leather strop, sharpening paste, and some shaving soap.
While the brush is quite nice and the razor is made of high-quality materials, it doesn’t come out of the box as sharp as you might like.
Be sure to include a gift certificate to a local cutlery store or even a whetstone so the person you buy this kit for can shave with a sharp blade.
Once the razor has been sharpened once, the strop and Dovo paste will keep it sharp for a very long time.
What we think about Zeva Wooden Straight Razor Shave Ready Handcrafted Shaving Set:
If you’re after a more unique style of shaving, this straight razor set offers plenty of amenities and a high-quality brush and razor. There’s a bit of headache involved in sharpening the razor for the first time, but your local knife store can help you with that in a few minutes for just a few dollars. Once you’re done with that, this kit will provide you everything you need to shave with a straight razor.
4.3 Mike the Mason Perfect Complete Shave Kit
It’s got an easy-open butterfly safety razor, a durable genuine badger brush, and organic soap that’s made with honey and oatmeal.
A few disposable razors are in the box, so the gift recipient will be able to open up this kit and begin shaving with it whenever they want.
Strangely, this kit comes with a razor stand but no brush stand. This is a bit odd since it’s fairly important that you keep your badger brush hanging with the bristles pointing down in between uses.
Still, the user-friendly razor, organic soap, and soft badger brush make this a great set for gifting.
What we think about Mike the Mason Perfect Complete Shave Kit:
This is definitely one of the better kits you can give to someone who wants to get started shaving. The accessible razor, quality brush, and useful amenities make it very easy to shave with, even for someone without a lot of practice. It’s pretty cheap, too!
5. Top 3 Luxury Shaving Kits
Wet shaving is all about creating a bespoke, luxurious experience for yourself each time you shave.
The best way to accomplish this is with quality shaving soap, a great pre-shave oil, and an extra soft shaving brush.
Look for soap with high-fat content and glycerine to make the best lather.
As far as balms and oils go, you’ll want a good mix of essential oils (for powerful scents and aromatherapy) and naturally soothing ingredients, like aloe vera and natural extracts.
Finally, badger brushes (especially silvertip badger brushes) are some of the softest around.
One of the best luxury sets with brass and nickel-plated handles of both DE Safety Razor and a Silver Tip Badger Brush and a stand for them both.
The most luxurious shaving set with a magnetized stand, carbon fiber brush and razor that is compatible with Gillette Mach3 blades.
Luxury gift or just a complete premium shaving set for yourself. Black and chrome collection with everything you need to start shaving right away.
5.1 Baxter of California Men’s Double Edged Razor Set
This is the softest, most expensive grade of badger hair that’s available.
It comes with a matching safety razor (with a 3-piece head) and a polished shaving stand that proudly displays both beautiful items on your counter while helping your brush dry properly between uses.
Since silvertip badger brushes are so expensive, this set is a pretty cost-effective way of acquiring one, even if you don’t need a razor.
The matching handle on the razor and beautiful stand make it a very tempting option, too.
What we think about Baxter of California Men’s Double Edged Razor Set:
This kit has one of the finest brushes you can find, making it a great choice for someone who wants a soft, luxurious brush to shave with. Even if you’ve already got a razor and stand, the fine design and cohesive appearance of this kit makes it a great purchase. It makes an excellent gift, too, especially if you know the recipient will get a lot of use out of the incredible silvertip brush.
5.2 HOMMAGE Carbon Fiber Shave Set
Instead, it’s got an elite carbon-fiber shave handle that takes Gilette Mach 3 blades.
If you’re into that sort of thing, it’s a unique, fancy way to use a more normal multi-blade razor.
The included stand, carbon fiber handles, and shaving brush look pretty neat, too.
What we think about HOMMAGE Carbon Fiber Shave Set:
Unless you’ve got lots of money to burn, this set is probably okay to skip. If you’re really looking to pimp out your bathroom, however, it’s a great way to look a bit better while you shave, especially if you want to skip the safety razor.
5.3 RoyalShave Black & Chrome Shaving Set – Stylish Safety Razor Set for Men
It’s remarkably inexpensive for a luxury kit, too, making it a great gift option.
It comes with a high-quality badger brush, a 3-piece safety razor, 10 refill blades, and sandalwood shaving soap to get you started.
It also includes a nice bowl to mix your lather in and an all-important shaving stand, which makes taking care of the badger brush much easier and looks fairly nice on your countertop.
All of the pieces have a matching black aesthetic and look great together, while beautiful blue packaging makes the item work great as a gift.
The only real downside to this kit is the fact that the included safety razor uses a 3-piece style instead of a butterfly opening. This makes it slightly harder to change razor blades, although it’s still pretty easy.
That said, you only have to change your blades every three to five shaves, so this isn’t that big of a deal for most people.
What we think about RoyalShave Black & Chrome Shaving Set:
If you’re after a fancy gift set or a complete luxury shaving kit for yourself, this Royal Shave box is definitely a good option. It’s got everything you need to get started and quality shaving components that will make shaving fun and easy.
6. Top 3 Shaving Sets – Without Shavers
If you already practice wet shaving, you probably don’t need an extra razor. You can save a little bit of money by choosing one of these kits.
While they don’t have razors, they’ve still got plenty of quality shaving products you can incorporate into your routine.
Premium 4-piece set features a pure high-quality badger brush and fantastic line of handcrafted sandalwood accessories.
Extended set of premium vintage accessories including a synthethic shaving brush and a stainless bowl for a reasonable price.
Great luxury set to suit any wet shaver: high-quality pure badger brush and other top-notch accessories for a pocket-friendly price.
6.1 The Art of Shaving Full Size Kit, Sandalwood
Razors aren’t particularly expensive, and there are lots of little things (like weight, opening style, and guard type) that differentiate them.
By choosing a kit without a razor, you can instead pick up the exact type of razor you want.
This kit comes with a standard genuine badger brush as well as a full line of sandalwood-scented shaving products.
There’s pre-shave oil, which helps to soften your hair and lubricate your skin, shaving cream, and an after-shave balm that will leave your face smelling great and looking smooth.
It’s a very well put together kit that serves as either a great gift set or an excuse to pick up a fancy badger brush.
What we think about The Art of Shaving Full Size Kit:
The effective, fragrant products in this kit are some of the finest oils, soaps, and balms you’ll find, while the genuine badger brush is instrumental to giving you a soft shaving experience. Despite the lack of a razor, this is still a great gift set. It’s also a great way to get some new products to try while you replace an old shaving brush.
6.2 Gentleman’s Hangar Old School Full Size Shaving Kit
Badger brushes are soft, classic, and effective. They’re not the only option, however, This shaving kit eschews the “normal” badger brush in favor of a less expensive synthetic one that’s still incredibly soft and great at working up a lather.
As a result, the overall kit is fairly cheap, despite the inclusion of a full set of sandalwood-scented shaving products.
There’s a pre-shave oil, shaving cream, after shave lotion, and even a shaving bowl to mix your lather in.
Like the other kits in this category, there’s no razor included.
What we think about Gentleman’s Hangar Old School Full Size Shaving Kit:
Razor-free kits like these are a great way to top off your collection of creams and oils, so the fact that this kit is affordable is a big plus. The soft synthetic brush is pretty nice, too. This is a great option if you’re looking for an inexpensive gift set or you’re looking to get started and you’d rather pick out your own razor.
6.3 Van Der Hagen Men’s Luxury Shave Set
It comes with a brush stand, shaving soap, a bowl for making lather, and a badger brush.
While the brush is made from genuine badger, it’s a definite downgrade from some of the brushes found in more expensive kits.
Still, the very low price tag on this shaving kit makes it an attractive option, even if the brush isn’t quite as durable as the brushes found in competing kits.
What we think about Van Der Hagen Men’s Luxury Shave Set:
This kit is incredibly inexpensive, making it one of the best options if you’re not sure how serious you (or your gift recipient) is about traditional shaving. While the badger brush isn’t the finest badger brush available, it’s still soft and very effective at getting the job done. Besides, with the money you’ve saved, you can just buy a fancy brush later on.
7. Top 3 Travel Shaving Kits
Wet shaving involves lots of products and time.
While the process itself takes up a full bathroom counter (or it does for me, anyway), you can still pack up the supplies you need to shave in a small kit for travel.
These kits offer handy carrying cases so that you can take your favorite shaving accessories wherever you go.
They’re TSA-approved, too, as long as you keep the razor blades in your checked baggage and not your carryon.
Leather Brown Dopp Bag definitely stands out in this travel set. It comes super handy, because you can hung it anywhere and it has many useful pockets.
Modern bag that holds everything from safety razor to black badger hair brush and the stand for both, to tons of other amazing acessories.
Shave ready travel kit comes in a rugged plastic carry case with mirror inside which makes this travel kit ideal for home, vacations or business trips.
7.1 Merkur #23001 Deluxe Travel Dopp Kit by GBS
It’s got all of the things you need to shave, including shaving soap, a bowl to mix lather in, a genuine badger brush, disposable razor blades, and a safety razor with an extra-long handle.
The bag has plenty of room for all of these items and more, meaning it’s a great way to pack all of your toiletries when you travel.
What we think about Merkur #23001 Deluxe Travel Dopp Kit:
This kit is very well priced, especially considering the great brush and old-fashioned leather bag. It’s an excellent addition to your arsenal of travel supplies if you want it to be. It’s also a fairly good option for gifting due to the full set of supplies contained within.
7.2 Gentleman Jon Deluxe Wet Shave Kit
It’s got a badger brush, shaving soap, a bowl, a safety razor, and plenty of blades to get you started.
Unlike the kit above, however, this one comes with a shaving stand, an alum block (to help prevent razor burn), and has a cohesive gunmetal aesthetic that ties all of the pieces together.
It’s a solid choice if you need something to take with you on the go.
What we think about Gentleman Jon Deluxe Wet Shave Kit:
This kit would be a pretty solid choice even without the bag. With the travel bag, it’s pretty hard to pass up. It’s affordable, it’s got everything you need to shave, and all of the contents are carefully chosen for quality.
7.3 Bigfoot Shaves Double Edge One Blade Safety Razor – Complete Travel Kit
There’s a 3-piece safety razor included, as well as a few blades to get you started on your shaving journey.
The razor itself is fairly nice and pleasant to use. It’s got just the right amount of weight to allow it to work effortlessly without any pressure from your hand.
You’ll definitely want to pick up some traditional shaving cream to use with it, however, and this necessitates the purchase of a shaving brush as well.
What we think about Bigfoot Shaves Double Edge One Blade Safety Razor:
This kit makes traveling with a safety razor a bit easier. Even if you don’t think you’ll travel a lot with it, it’s not particularly expensive, so it’s a great way to add a safety razor to your collection of shaving tools. You’ll need to purchase your other shaving supplies separately, however.
8. Top 3 Shaving Kits with Shaving Bowl
For many men, using a teacup or regular kitchen bowl detracts a little bit from the bespoke shaving experience you’re trying to create.
There’s no difference in the quality of the shave, of course, but it’s somewhat jarring to have an everyday dish intrude on your elaborate ritual.
These kits come with carefully chosen shaving bowls that will help ensure your shave remains sacred.
Complete top-notch shaving kit that covers everything you need to start wet shaving right away.
Huge 9-piece straight razor shaving kit designed for more advanced users who're looking for a superior set of accessories and are therefore ready to pay slightly more.
Top rated shaving brush and soap kit that also comes together with stainless steel shaving stand and bowl, offers top quality for super low price.
8.1 Colonel Conk Custom Black Shave Kit
It’s got a very nice 5-piece safety razor, a soft badger brush, and even traditional shave soap with few DE Gillette blades.
This means you can enjoy a luxurious shave the moment you open it.
Most importantly, despite the inclusive nature of this kit, it’s pretty affordable. It’s a great way to pick up everything you need (including a bowl) without spending a lot.
What we think about Colonel Conk Custom Black Shave Kit:
This inexpensive kit is a perfect way to get your bathroom fully stocked so you can enjoy a traditional shave. The full range of included products will let you indulge in a complete shaving ritual, while the high-quality brush, razor, and soap mean that it’ll be tons of fun.
8.2 Colonel Conk Model 2316 Straight Razor Set with Santa Fe Bowl
Unlike the other set, however, this kit is centered around a straight razor instead of a safety razor.
This fixed blade tool requires careful use and a bit of care, but it delivers a unique traditional shaving experience that you can’t get with a safety razor no matter how hard you try.
The set comes with shaving soap, pre-shave oil, and aftershave lotion as well as a bowl, badger brush, and brush stand.
The razor itself is made from 6/8” carbon steel from Germany. You’ll probably want to pick up a strop to keep it sharp (or simply use an old belt)
What we think about Colonel Conk Model 2316 Straight Razor Set with Santa Fe Bowl:
If straight razor shaving is something you’re interested in, this set is a brilliant way to get started. It makes a good gift, too, as long as you have a friend who’s expressed an interest in old-fashioned shaving. The quality razor and full set of amenities will go over great!
8.3 Stainless Steel Shaving Bowl Kit by Anbbas
It comes with goat milk shaving soap as well, meaning that it’s a self-contained package that gives you everything you need to make traditional shaving lather.
While there isn’t much else in the box, it’s still an excellent kit to give to someone or to use yourself while you give traditional lather a spin.
The badger brush is quite soft, silky, and has enough firmness to work lots of bubbles into the shaving soap and then into your beard area.
What we think about Stainless Steel Shaving Bowl Kit by Anbbas:
This kit is a very low-cost way of giving traditional shaving cream a try without breaking the bank. It’s also a very affordable gift that you can give to anyone who might want to dabble in old-fashioned shaving. The soft brush, quality soap, and handy stand make this a fine kit indeed.
9. Top 3 Straight Razor Shaving Kits
Straight razors give you ultimate control over your shave.
They’re harder to use than safety razors by a fair bit, but the lack of any sort of built-in guard means you can do anything you want with the blade.
If you want incredibly fine control over your shave (or you want to feel like you’re living on the edge), these kits give you the tools you need to start shaving with a straight razor.
Best straight razor shaving kit - either for home or professional use, great travel solution and wonderful gift idea.
Top-notch stainless steel and chrome straight razor shaving kit primarily for professional and barbershop use or some advanced users.
Top rated professional straight razor set that can also be a great gift for men who're looking for highest quality products.
9.1 The Solomon Straight Razor Shaving Razor Kit – Genuine Japanese Steel Blade by Naked Armor
This kit has everything you need to keep the included high-carbon razor sharp and ready to go.
It’s got a razor, a strop and sharpening paste as well as shaving soap, a badger beard brush, a traveling case, and a wooden box that you can use to keep everything in.
The blade itself is made from fine Japanese steel and features a design that’s halfway between a full hollow and a half hollow (so a three-quarters hollow).
It’s quite effective and retains an edge very well. There will be some amount of a learning curve, of course, with both this and all of the other cut-throat razors on this page.
What we think about The Solomon Straight Razor Shaving Razor Kit:
This kit is stuffed full of quality tools for you to shave with. While it’s not the least expensive kit on this page, you don’t have to worry about replacement razor blades and you get the unique experience of shaving with a cut-throat razor. The Japanese steel blade will hold up for many years and is covered by a lifetime warranty. Overall, it’s a pretty solid choice you definitely won’t regret.
9.2 Parker SR1 Straight Razor Set
It comes with a pure badger brush, the razor itself, a stand for both the razor and the brush, and a few half blades so you can begin shaving immediately.
While this razor doesn’t require maintenance, it’s a bit harder to use than a fixed-blade cut-throat razor.
This shouldn’t deter you from purchasing it, however. It’s an excellent tool that has the advantage of using disposable blades.
This means there’s no edge to care for, and it’s always going to be incredibly sharp.
What we think about Parker SR1 Straight Razor Set:
This isn’t as much of a casual gift kit as it is a set of professional tools. If you’re serious about shaving, you share your razor with other people, or you just want to use the same tools that a barber would, this Parker kit is absolutely a top choice.
9.3 Professional Straight Razor Barber Shave Kit by Broquet
It’s got after shave, glycerin soap that makes excellent lather, and pre-shave oil that you can use to moisturize your face.
The included razor is a shavette, which means it takes disposable blades and will stay sharp forever.
There’s also a pure badger brush for making lather and working it into your face.
Like the above kit, this razor is a bit different from a straight razor with a permanent blade. It’ll require a bit of practice to use.
The constant sharpness, easy maintenance, and effortless cleaning make it more than worth it, however.

Simple and cheap starter set with chrome plated safety brush, a travel case with mirror and 30 strong blades for refilments.
Complete beginner set that has it all. Butterfly-open safety razor with some free blades, a chrome shaving brush, a stand and to top if off, a bowl with a soap.
10.1 The Raven Safety Razor Kit by Mike the Mason
Rather than letting it hang from a tangle of metal, the stand is a solid base that holds the base of your razor.
Pulling it out of the stand (like a sword from a stone) will be a fun part of your shaving experience.
The razor itself is made from solid aluminum and has the right amount of weight.
It’s got a fairly aggressive edge that can take a bit of time to get used to, but once you’ve gotten in some practice it’ll deliver an incredibly close shave.
What we think about The Raven Safety Razor Kit by Mike the Mason:
This little kit is a great choice for anyone who needs a replacement safety razor. While it doesn’t come with all of the shaving amenities that are sometimes included in other kits, this means you’re free to choose a brush or shaving soap that you actually like instead of one that your razor’s manufacturer picked out for you.
10.2 Dorco Prime Starter Set: Double Edge Safety Butterfly Shaver
It’s got a butterfly-opening safety razor, 30 disposable razor blades, and a travel case with a built-in mirror for shaving on the go.
Again, you’re free to use your favorite kind of shaving cream, your favorite brush, and your own aftershave.
The razor itself is built solidly and has the right amount of weight. It’s got a handle that’s about 3.125”.
The top features a butterfly opening, which most people find is a bit easier to work with than a 3-piece razor handle. This means you don’t have to dry your hands before you change razor blades.
What we think about Dorco Prime Starter Set:
This kit is a great way to pick up a butterfly safety razor if you’re tired of fumbling with your 3-piece model. It’s very affordable as well, meaning you’ll have plenty of room in your budget to purchase old-fashioned shaving soap or a badger brush if you need one.

An Introduction To Wet Shaving
If you still have some questions about men’s shaving kits, please navigate to our extended guide. But now it’s time to introduce you to the world of wet shaving.
Although wet shaving hardly needs an introduction. It’s a term that describes using bespoke tools to achieve a personalized, quality shave. Men who choose wet shaves prioritize having a smooth, comfortable shaving experience over a fast one. They take their time to care for their faces the right way.
How Often Can You Wet Shave?
Many men enjoy a wet shave every day. As long as you have the time, you can completely replace your hurried, commercial shaving ritual with a handcrafted wet shave each morning. There’s one exception to this: if your face is irritated (for any reason), it’s probably a good idea to let the irritation die down before you take a razor to it. This means that if you give yourself razor burn by shaving against the grain with a 5-blade razor, you should wait until your face is calm and healthy before you shave again.
What’s The Difference Between Wet And Dry Shaving?
The big thing that separates wet shaving from dry shaving is time. A dry shave involves canned shaving cream and a multi-bladed monstrosity that hurries the shaving process by literally ripping hairs from your skin. Alternately, it might happen with the use of an electric tool that trims hairs while barely touching your skin, giving you 5 o’clock shadow before your day even starts. There’s nothing wrong with either of these techniques, especially if you’re starved for time. On the other hand, neither will pamper your face and neither will give you a shave that’s anywhere near as close as you’ll get with a wet shave.
Of course, a wet shave takes time. You have to warm your face and get it wet, either with a shower or a hot towel. Then, you have to manually create a lather and apply it to your skin. Finally, the actual technique of shaving requires time, care, and practice. You can’t hurry your passes with a cut-throat razor without cutting yourself. If you take your time, however, you’ll get an incredibly close shave that will leave your face glowing.
What’s The Best Wet Shave Razor?
There are three styles of razors that are popular among wet shaving enthusiasts. Safety razors have a metal handle that keeps a single, disposable double-edged razor blade ready for use. The handle has a metal assembly around the blade that limits how far it can cut into your skin should your hand slip. It requires a bit of care to use a safety razor still, but the guards and the blade angle mean that you’ll learn quickly in a safe environment.
Shavettes and cut throat razors have no guards. Cut-throat razors are sharp metal blades that fold into a razor handle, while shavettes are similar devices that take disposable razor blades. If you choose to go with a fixed-blade straight razor (or cut-throat razor), you’ll have to strop and/or sharpen your blade in between shaves.
The lack of guards means that these blades are much more dangerous than safety razors. On the other hand, you also have a lot more control over the angle and position of the blade. This means that you can theoretically get a better, smoother, faster shave. In practice, however, rushing things with a cut-throat razor or a shavette is a bad idea.
If one of these tools appeals to you more than the others, you should absolutely pick that tool and use it. Wet shaving is all about customizing your shaving experience to fit your face and preferences. If nothing jumps out at you, however, it’s probably best to start with a safety razor. You can always switch later if you decide you want to.
How To Wet Shave For The First Time
Most of the techniques involved in wet shaving are pretty similar regardless of the blade you use. Whether you’re wet shaving with a shavette, a safety razor, or a cut-throat razor, you’ll almost always perform these basic steps.
1. Soak your Brush
This step is only necessary if you’re using a boar hair or other stiff animal brush. In order to get the most out of these harsh brushes, you should soak the bristles (or just the tips, if you prefer more backbone in your brush) in warm water for at least 90 seconds. You can do this while you shower and wash your face.
2. Warm and wet your face
Getting your beard hair wet and warm is an important first step. This softens the hair and helps prepare your skin for the shave to come. Many men take a hot shower right before they shave. If you don’t want to do this, wash your face with hot water and then apply a hot towel to your beard area.
3. Use Pre-Shave Oil
In order to ensure that there’s a thin layer of lubrication between your razor blade and your skin, many men choose to apply a pre-shave oil to their warm, wet faces before they shave. Many commercial shaving oils exist, but you can also try raiding your kitchen cupboard. Olive oil, grapeseed oil, and other natural oils are commonly used as pre-shave oils. That said, you’ll get more pleasant results from a well-chosen pre-shave oil with essential oils and extracts that will keep your face healthy. Apply this before you make your lather to give it some time to work.
4. Make A Lather
Wet shaving doesn’t use shaving cream from a can. Instead, you’ll mix a hard soap or gel with a small amount of water in a bowl. You use your shaving brush to literally whip up a frothy mixture of fatty soap and water that should come out with the consistency of whipped cream. It only takes a very small bit of soap or gel to make enough lather to cover your whole face.
One trick here: it’s easier to add more water than it is to take water away. Start with a couple drops and see where that takes you. Also, don’t expect whipping up a lather to be instant. It should take a little bit of time.
5. Apply Lather
Using your shaving brush, really work the lather into your skin in a thin layer. You don’t need to pile very much lather up. Instead, focus on using your brush’s bristles to massage it into your skin. You want to make sure you get lather beneath every hair on your beard. A circular motion is usually best.
The general techniques you’ll use for wet shaving are the same for all types of razors. Here’s a quick rundown of what you should do as a beginner.
a) Shave with the grain ONLY. Shaving against the grain increases your risk of razor burn and cutting yourself. If you want a really close shave, try shaving perpendicular to the grain after you’ve got a couple of weeks of practice with your razor. For most men, this is more than enough.
The “grain” refers to the natural direction of hair growth on your face. For most men, beard hair grows from top to bottom. This means you’ll start strokes near your ears and then pull down to your chin. Every man’s face is different, however, so it’s a good idea to use your eyes and hands to figure out exactly how your beard hair grows. Be sure to re-evaluate your beard every year or so to see if your face changes as you age.
b) To shave, start with the razor at the top of a stroke. Gently touch it to your skin at a 90-degree angle, then rotate it down to 45 to 30 degrees. Once you’ve got the correct angle, very slowly move the razor down and complete the stroke. Do NOT use a lot of pressure. The weight of the razor will almost always provide more than enough pressure on its own. Instead, simply keep the razor in gentle contact with your skin.
c) After each stroke, rinse off the blade. With a safety razor, you can get away with two strokes between rinsing by simply rotating the razor and using the other side.
d) Take things slow. If you’re using a cut-throat razor or a shavette for the first time, don’t feel obligated to shave every nook and cranny of your face. Instead, focus on the big, easy cheek strokes and use your normal shaving method to finish off the rest. You can shave these harder areas tomorrow when you have a bit more experience.
7. Clean Up
Once you’ve completed your shave, rinse any remaining lather off of your face with cold water. This will help close your pores and prepare your face for the day.
When you’re done with that, thoroughly rinse any lather out of your brush and shake out as much water as possible. Hang it up bristles down to air dry. This will ensure that your brush will last a long time.
8. Apply Aftershave
Aftershave isn’t just a vanity product. A well-made aftershave will help moisturize your face and keep it vibrant and clear. Look for something without any alcohol that has ingredients like aloe vera and a pleasant scent.
