How Metal Detector Works

Many people around the world enjoy using metal detectors in discovering underground treasure. The security services and the military also use metal detctors in uncovering hidden weapons like knives, guns and mines. These detectors are based on the electromagnetism science.

Most of the treasure hunters began as coin collectors. A coin collector looking for an ultra-rare Liberty Head nickel worthy millions will get a detector to help him.

Many treasure hunters are also amateur archaeologists. Some of the things that may necessitate you to get a metal detecor include searching of cannonballs, civil war artifacts, bullets and lost wedding ring.

In case you want to learn how to build your own metal detector, read this guide.

The metal detectors are made up of the following parts:

a) Stabilizer – as you sweep back and forth, the stabilizer is helpful in steadying the metal ditector unit.

b) Control box – has the controls, circuitry, batteries, speaker and microprocessor.

c) Shaft – it connects the coil and the control box and can be adjusted to suit your height.

d) Search coil – it’s the part that senses the metal and is also known as the antenna, search head or loop.

e) Jack – this is used for connecting the headphones. Operation of a metal dector is a simple process. The first step is to turn the unit on and then move slowly towards the area you intend to make your search. You then have to sweep the coil back and forth on the ground ahead of you.

An audible signal will be heard once the detector passes over the target.

Advanced detectors have a display option to help you see the type of metal that has been detected. It can also tell you how deep the target object is located in the ground.

The detectors use one of the available three technologies to detect objects:

a) Very low frequency (VLF) – this is the most popular technology in use today. It is also known as induction balance.

Two distinct coils (transmitter and receiver) come with a VLF metal detector. The transmitter coil is the outer loop in which electricity is send thousands of times every second.

The receiver coil is the inner loop that has a wire acting as an antenna to pick and amplify frequencies coming from the target object. An electromagnetic field is created by the movement of the current through the transmitter coil.

b) Pulse induction (PI) – this is a less known type when compared to the VLF metal detctors. It uses a single coil for both the transmitter and the receiver.

Powerful short pulses of current are send through the coil of wire with each pulse generating a magnetic field. At the end of each pulse, the magnetic field reverses polarity thus resulting in a sharp electrical spike.

A reflected pulse current then flows through the coil for about 30 microseconds. Another pulse is send and then the process repeats itself for about 100 pulses every second. The magnetic fields from the target objects in a PI detector adds an echo to the reflected pulse hence making it last longer.

c) Beat-frequency oscillation (BFO) – this is the most basic way of detecting metals.

This technology uses two coils of wire. A larger coil is located within the search head while the smaller coil is located within the control box. An oscillator is connected to each of the coils and it produces thousands of pulses every second.

There is a slight offset in the frequency of the pulses between the coils. The coil generates radio waves from the pulses which are then picked by the receiver to create beats based on the frequency differences.

When passing over the target object, the beats will change in tone and duration due to deviations in the frequencies.

How Far Can Metal Detectors Detect/Reach

Most metel detectors will reach a maximum depth of between 8 to 12 inches.

The depths may however vary depending on the following factors:

a) Type of metal detector – the capability of the detector depends largely on the technology used. VLF detectors for instance uses higher frequencies when compared to other detectors.

The sensor and amplification technology may also vary from one manufacturer to another or even among different models offered by the same manufacturer.

b) Type of metal in the object – metals such as iron have stronger magnetic fields when compared to others.

c) Object size – large objects at deep levels are much harder to detect than smaller objects.

d) Makeup of the soil – some soils are good conductors and hence may interfere with the current flow.

e) The duration – certain metal objects increase their conductivity when they stay for a longer period of time in the soil.

f) Interference from other objects – items like pipes or cables within the ground may interfere with the pulses.

How Many Types Of Metal Detector Exist

Metal detctors have been around for many years having been originally designed to detect explosives.

Alexander Graham invented the first metal detector in 1881 and its concept has largely remained the same.

Metel detectors work on two concepts i.e. electricity and magnetism.

Technology refinement has led to four different types of detectors in existence today.

a) Beat Frequency Oscillation – this is the most basic detector available in most electronic shops.

b) Very Low-Frequency Detectors – this is the most popular detector and is commonly used by the experienced treasure seekers.

c) Pulse Induction – it’s one of the latest innovations on the market mostly used by guards to detect concealed weapons.

d) Industrial Metal Detectors – found in airports and buildings as it’s most commonly used for security purposes.

Summary

It’s quite clear that there are many metel detectors on the market today. For this reason, you have to access your needs so as to select the most appropriate detector that will be suitable for you as an individual and serve you better in any given environment.

You can trust any of the above listed metal detector the next time you go out to look for treasures.

Many experienced hunters find it hard to pinpoint the best metal detector available in the market. In fact an attempt to ask them will yield as many answers as the number of hunters you may have asked. All of them may be correct anyway since there is no single detector that can be considered better than the other.

The choice of the best metal detector boils down to your choice, budget and experience level.
